There are places where you know exactly what you’re supposed to admire. And then there are places that simply make you feel something. For me, the Wooden Articular Church in Svätý Kríž belongs to the second kind.
It stands there quietly, without any need to show off. Almost as if it doesn’t need to prove how extraordinary it is. And yet, it’s impossible to overlook.
It’s enormous. One of the largest wooden buildings in Europe – or at least in Central Europe. And its capacity? 6,000 people!
Un-be-liev-able!
And here’s something even more remarkable: it was built by Jozef Lang, a master carpenter who could neither read nor write.
And yet, despite its size, the church doesn’t feel monumental to me in the traditional sense. It feels humble. And perhaps it was exactly that unusual contrast that fascinated me the most. You don’t even have to step inside.
Just standing in the courtyard and looking at it is enough to leave you in awe.I honestly can’t think of a better word for it than...enchanting.

Wood. Two tiers of galleries. A Baroque altar. A magnificent chandelier made of Venetian glass. And the light filtering in from outside... You could spend time studying every detail on its own. But together, they create an atmosphere that a photograph simply can’t fully capture. There is something magical about this place. Not grandiose. Not theatrical.
Quiet.
And perhaps that’s exactly what makes it so powerful.
Once you learn its story, you begin to see the church a little differently.
It didn’t originally stand in Svätý Kríž at all. Its home was Paludza, one of the villages that disappeared in connection with the construction of the Liptovská Mara reservoir.
To save this precious building, the church was carefully dismantled and relocated to the place where it stands today – on the boundary between Svätý Kríž and Lazisko.
And when you realise that what you’re looking at isn’t simply an old wooden church, but a piece of Liptov that was saved from the rising waters, the whole place suddenly takes on another layer of meaning.

Sometimes it’s the place itself that makes a visit special. And sometimes it’s the person you meet there. We were lucky enough to have both.
A huge thank you goes to the lovely lady who looks after the church. She took the time to talk to us and shared not only fascinating stories about the church itself, but also about the surrounding area. And she was absolutely overflowing with tips for other places to explore.
After a while, I had the feeling that if we stayed another half an hour, we’d leave with enough ideas to fill the next two weeks. And then she told us something that made me admire her even more.
She still goes cross-country skiing. She still goes hiking.
Meanwhile, some days I can barely manage to put my shoes on.
So... We came to admire the church. And left admiring the person who had brought its story to life for us, too.

Perhaps these are exactly the moments that make me want to keep discovering Liptov. It isn’t “just” the mountains, caves, water, historic places or beautiful views. It’s the people too.
People who still head into the mountains. Who know the stories of their region. Who tell you where you should go next – and somehow manage to add another five recommendations to the first one. Sometimes, being around them makes me feel that life here is simply lived a little differently.
Perhaps more actively. Perhaps closer to nature.
And sometimes it even feels richer. Not in things. In experiences.
And that’s another reason why I love coming back here.
For us, absolutely!
If you’re passing through the area, don’t make the mistake of admiring it only from the outside.
Step inside.
Because I think it’s only then that you truly understand why this humble wooden giant is one of those places in Liptov that is worth not only seeing... but taking a moment to truly feel.
Mária
P.S. Our next stop will take us to a very different kind of wooden giant called Grút. Have you heard of him?
