Hike to Veľký Choč – One of the Most Beautiful Views in Slovakia

If you love the mountains, don't miss the hike to Veľký Choč (1,611 m above sea level) during your stay at Jasná Escape. This iconic peak of the Liptov region is one of Slovakia's most popular hiking destinations and rewards visitors with one of the most spectacular 360-degree panoramic views in the country.

From the summit, you can admire breathtaking views of the Low Tatras, Western Tatras, Veľká Fatra, Malá Fatra, Orava Beskids, and the Liptov Basin. On a clear day, visibility stretches for dozens of kilometres.

Several Hiking Trails Lead to Veľký Choč

One of the great advantages of Veľký Choč is that there are several marked hiking trails leading to the summit. You can choose the route that best matches your fitness level and the amount of time you want to spend hiking.

The most popular starting points include:

  • Valaská Dubová – the most frequently used hiking route.
  • Lúčky – ideal for hikers who want to combine their hike with a visit to the famous spa village.
  • Jasenová – a longer and more peaceful route.
  • Vyšný Kubín – a favourite among experienced hikers.

Our Favourite Route – From Valaská Dubová

If we had to recommend just one route, it would definitely be the hike from Valaská Dubová. It's the trail we choose most often ourselves.

The route is well marked, leading through forests before opening onto mountain meadows. The final ascent along the rocky ridge is one of the most beautiful sections of the entire hike. This is where the first breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape begin to unfold.

The hike to the summit takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on your pace and fitness level. During the summer months, we recommend setting off early in the morning so you can enjoy the summit before it gets busy.

Views You'll Never Forget

Veľký Choč is famous for standing alone, separate from the main mountain ranges. Thanks to its unique location, it offers an almost 360-degree panoramic view that ranks among the finest in Slovakia.

From the summit, you can admire:

  • the Low Tatras with the iconic Chopok peak,
  • the Western Tatras and Roháče,
  • Veľká Fatra,
  • Malá Fatra,
  • the Liptov Basin,
  • the Orava region and the surrounding villages.

It's no surprise that many hikers consider Choč to offer one of the most beautiful panoramic views in the entire country.

Practical Tips Before the Hike

  • Wear sturdy hiking boots.
  • Bring plenty of water, as there are no opportunities to refill your bottle along the trail.
  • Even in summer, it can be windy at higher elevations, so it's worth packing a lightweight jacket.
  • Check the latest weather forecast and start your hike as early as possible in the morning.

A Tip from Jasná Escape

Veľký Choč is the perfect full-day trip during your stay in the Liptov region. From Jasná Escape, it takes approximately 40 minutes by car to reach Valaská Dubová. After your hike, you can unwind in the comfort of the apartment or visit one of the nearby wellness centres.

If you're looking for a hike that combines a moderate challenge, beautiful nature, and some of the most breathtaking views in Slovakia, Veľký Choč should definitely be on your list.
